There was a conversation in the clinic this week between staff and clients, about the cost of coffee and how much it has risen. That got me thinking about how much money I spend per week on coffee. I only have 1-2 coffees per day and one of those is usually at work. If I drink instant coffee, no worries. A can of coffee is about €4.50 and it will last about a month. If I get coffee at a cafe that's another story. The average cost of a cup of coffee in Ireland is €3.50. So on average if I have 2 cups of coffee from a shop or cafe per week it works out like this:
2 coffees/week x 3.50 x 45wks/yr = €315/ year
(45 weeks... a few weeks off per year)
But I drink fancy coconut lattes (€4.20)...I know pretentious right! (In my defense, I can't drink cows milk) So...
2 coffees/week x 4.20 x 45 weeks/yr = €378
3 coffees/week x 4.20 x 45 weeks/yr = €567
4 coffees/week x 4.20 x 45weeks/yr = €756
5 coffees/week x 4.20 x 45weeks/yr = €945
The other consideration is, how often do you get a coffee without a snack? So tack on another €2-5 per coffee run. Or do you drink more coffee than I do?
Now, I am by no means saying to give up coffee! I love my fancy coconut lattes! I love the chats with the ladies in the cafe when I place my order. I love that they remember my name, what I drink, and they ask about my family. It gives me a little boost that is important to my emotional wellbeing. Maybe you feel the same.
But...could you go with one less coffee per week and add regular massages to help your physical wellbeing?
€3.50 x 45 = €157 That's 2 massages per year
€4.20 x 45 = €189 That's nearly 3 massages per year
But why is regular massage so important?
The body has great muscle memory. Which means the more massages you get the better the muscle tissues respond. Those pesky neck and shoulder niggles don't turn into a crick or constant pain. Tension headaches go away quicker. Your body copes with stress better. Your sleeping patterns improve. These are just some of the physical benefits of regular massage.
You may also consider the emotional benefits. Such as the feeling of relaxation after your massage. Taking time to do something purely for yourself and the emotional resilience that builds up when stress is relieved.
Ideally, I would recommend getting massage once a month, especially if you are in a desk job. (Or weekly if you win the lotto! Sure, why not daily!) If that seems like too much try one massage ever season or every 3/4 months. If you have a specific injury that needs work; 2-3 sessions, once per week is recommended depending on the injury.
Lastly, I would add that it is the time of year for Gift Vouchers! If your hubby/wife/kids have no idea what to get you for Christmas, just give them this link:
Between a lovely gift voucher and one less coffee a week you could be getting regular massages to improve your physical and emotional wellbeing!
I hope to see you on my massage table soon!!
